Single Family House in Kacergine

Architect: Gintaras Balcytis
The yellow stone and white render walls of this house in the Lithuanian countryside curve around to form a semicircle।

Completed by architect Gintaras Balcytisto in 2009, the two-storey building accommodates a family living outside the city of Kauros।

While standing in the inner area of the building the glass windows-walls of the structure engage the viewer to look towards the river which once again turns into an integral part of the house and the landscape. On the second floor of the house, all four bedrooms have large windows and terraces which, too, open to the river.

Technological-structural choices:
Reinforced concrete structure with steel columns. Ground floor external walls – 25 cm ceramic blocks, 15cm stone wool insulation, 12-15 cm yellow stone finish, second floor external walls – 25 cm ceramic blocks, 20cm stone wool insulation with plaster finish.

William Blake and Karavadgio in Pushkinsky museum

Everybody know that works of Karavadgio and William Blake are in Pushkinsky museum now.Like most people I was interested in this exhibition and I visited it.

I was standing in the line more than two hours,than I got to the museum.To tell the truth,William Blakes work interested me more,espessialy his aquarells, and first of all I went to see them.

I decided not to take the headphones,where someone tell about works and authors . I would like to see the works and combined what I have known so little in new thoughts.

Blakes works is so interesting and mystical.You can always try to guess what he want to say, but I also think that you never understand. May be because he had a visions during his life,may be he was mad,may be because he was genius.

Blake is very good of drawing human body.I like his aquarellies illustrations,especially to Dante and Shekespeare. They seems to sent out the light.And his tempera works is so colorful.

And I think that his all work are very sinsere, what I cant say about Karavadgio work.

His work seems for me not happy,not realistic,despite of his tragic life.After watching his work,I went to look on Blake works again.

Of course it is only my opinion.And I want advise to everyone to visit this exhibition.

Italian design has some main features that makes it different from others. There are brightness of ideas, courage in using new materials and experimentation.

The Multimedia Art Museum represents the exhebition "DANCE IN VOGUE".

There is a collection of photos that were made by different authors. They transmit so many emotions, and always positive. The boost that gives that exhibition has a long term effect.

Thanks to commentaries under each photo, everybody (not only who knows well the ballet history) can feel the atmosphere of the exhibition deeper.

Stanley Kubrick is a very famoust photographer.

As i found out Stanley Kubrick began to make the professional photos in the secondary school and was chosen as a school photographer. Then at the age of 17 he started to work in the "LOOK" magazine. He made reports about after war life, perfomances, concerts, circus, life of actors and musicians.

Everything what i have seen on the exhibition in Multimedia Art Museum looks professional, like all these photos were made by experienced artist. To my surprise all works were made at the period when Stenley Kubrick was young (17 years old)! Not everybody could achieve such a perfect result at the age of 17.

The only on explanation of that is the great talant of author.

Space has a different nature. Some are uncomfortable for us. Others are not noticeable, they are convenient and simple. The third one are so incredible that we want to return to them again and again. There are also spaces from the past and from the future. If we use that representation, we can imagine how people existed or will exist in space. The space of the future, we can see in science fiction films. And from the past - in old photographs, and films. And sometimes we can really see it by our eyes, but through the prism of time.

Let's try a little dip into the past. Of greatest interest, perhaps, may provide abandoned mines. If any of you ever played apocalyptic computer games, or certainly there are those who looked fantastic films. You look at these pictures and think, "Is it a real place on the Earth or is it computer graphics? How could someone had the idea to create this place?"

We all know that the hobbits from Lord of the Rings actually lived in New Zealand. Their houses are still standing there. 10 years have passed! And the flying island from the Avatar are also exist. It's a real-life towers of quartz-sandstone deep in the rugged mountain terrain of southern Hunan in China in the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.

Returning to the theme of apocalyptic, this year will be a very popular theme about the end of the world. My plans are not include such way of developments, so I can say with confidence that this will not happen. But let's imagine how could it looks like at the example of the deep mines far in Japan.

One day, as the hero of the book Treasure Island, I came upon a map. But the map is not distant, overseas locations, and deep underground - part of the mine maps Hiikava or Okutama. Place close enough and well-known in the past year I've been there three times. The map was found in the ruins of the mine-management, along with radio stations from the past. Long evenings I watched the intertwining tunnels, a pop-up images in the mind, and a soft voice whispered - "go, go..."
The main purpose of the trip consisted of 2 parts. First - to clarify the the map (dates 19 years ago). It had many tunnels which were collapsed and flooded. Second - figuring out where to go on road traction rope, where and how the trucks are loaded the rock.

Map was quite accurate, however, for 20 years, many tunnels have been destroyed by open pit rock excavators which nibbling mountain as mice nibbling cheese. And now there are gaping black portals in the vertical walls. Old mechanisms goes down to the incredible depth. The second purpose of the trip brought me back to the "trolley" tunnel. We went forward to survey even the smallest branch, and drifts. Some of them ended in backing or rubble, some went down and were flooded and silted.
And then I found something. Unfortunately, it was something quite inconvenient to take pictures with the possible perspectives, so please listen. Horizons left from the spiral descent and they all was at different levels, broken off into the abyss. A huge cavity occurred in the womb of the mountain, a few dozen meters in diameter and incredible depth. Phoenix TK30, barely pierced the darkness of the underground, the far wall was visible, but very, very weak. Most likely there was a vertical place to collect ore, and some natural disaster or an miners' error caused tremendous crash. Obviously, it left on somewhere above. Close to the edge the surface of the lens immediately misted because of warm air. Perhaps this collapse was the cause to stop tunnel lining, and perhaps to complete closure of the mine.

This story and photos of real place in Japan. They exist in reality. It is a reflection of the past. And, perhaps, a mirror of the future. Very distant, of course. What is interesting in these mines? What they have in common with the design, so clean and beautiful? First, the feelings aroused by this space. This fear, curiosity and our imagination about it. Textures on the walls, materials through time. How often do you see the machines that are used in production? For me, for example, it is something new anyway - I really love to research something new. But they already have a print life. Abandoned, but they have a life. People were here, many people. They worked here almost every day. They had their feelings, worries. It's very exciting - to feel it. Your can represent theirs ordinary life in imagination. And learn a different way of looking at things. Acutely feel the space around yourself through adventure, which is not always safe, clean and beautiful.

Сhronology-project in Strelka Institute

Starting this year a winter project called "Сhronology" will work in the courtyard of the Institute for Media, Architecture and Design "Strelka". Every winter a new artist designer or architect will present his work here.

The first member of the new project is an architectural bureau "Alexander Brodsky," Brodsky himself, together with three colleagues have created a installation called "Teplyaki". This is a small room with wooden beams and polyethylene, installed near the exits of three classrooms of the institute. In the evening they glow: there are artificial fires made of fabrics, warm air and light in the middle of each building.

I had a task about another Brodskiy's object (95" Restaurant) and can say that this work is absolutely in his style. He likes simple, even brutal things and ideas. He is true to himself as usual.

In general the teplyaki are simple, primitive, winter installations, which are usually built on construction sites to perform winter activities. They have a form of a box, filled with warm air, that seems quite rough and brutal. They are suitable for having a rest, warm, smoke and chat. They are a symbol of winter pastime. - Aleksander says.

This post will be interesting for people who already work as an interior designer. An incredible cabinetmaker and craftsman Denis Milovanov was be mentioned in the last issue of interior magazine "Seasons". Hi creates timber furniture style not quite popular in Russia.

It is important that Denis works with perished trees, restoring life living. Huge blocks of oak he finds in a forest, they just lie there and rot. It turns out, oaks often die from a lightning strike because of the fact that their wood is rich in iron.

Denis inspiration is cold and space of Russian North and African traditional sculpture. His final products never 100% correspond to their sketches: curves of wood dictates final image of the object. Wood is a living substance, full of its own force and energy. Denis can make experiments with a piece of hardwood for a few months, digging it into the ground, and leaving under the rain to bring special color to the final object.

His works are most popular in America and Japan even in spite of the difficulty and high cost of transportation.

I was trying to find like-minded clients, but our people still basically like shining and luxury things. But this is not really important. - Denis says.

Imagine that you are in a some space. Do you like it? What makes you think like that? And by the way what makes space good or bad for you? I would like to show the space that inspires me. It may looks like quite ordinary, but in fact the inspiration, beauty, strangeness is very close, all around us. I am very inspired by dark subway tunnels . Their atmosphere is perhaps a little scary, but beautiful. Monotone lines, sounds, textures on the walls. They are rough, but not boring. It has this atmosphere, which are breathtaking.

The Moscow metro is amazing. A convenient form of transport, serving millions of people daily, is also an architectural heritage of our country. For 80 years under the ground up an entire city, "Mosmetrostroy" built 177 stations, laid over 600 kilometers of tunnels, built more than 250 halls, 15 depots, 180 combined traction substations and many other underground and surface facilities.

December 8 opened a new exhibition at the Vistavochnaya station. The exhibition is dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Moscow Metrostroy. The exposition will be open to the public until May 15, 2012. Preparing photos for the exhibition coincided with another project - a new photo book by the same author, Alexander Popov. Format 40 on 30 cm, 20 turns, metallic paper. Here is some photos from that book.

As a bonus, I would like to show photos of the subway, which, to be honest, inspires me a little more. It is about Tokyo subway. Station and the underground part. Architectural madness by Atelier Olschinsky

Despite the fact that the architecture should be robust, well-structured and well thought-out, it's often just about feeling, about the atmosphere. When there was no 3D editors, Zaha Hadid painted his pictures with his hands to convey feelings, motion, color. This work was interesting in itself, without context.

There are many ways to develop ideas and work on design. But I really like the idea of independent works of art inside architectural or interior project. When developing and sketches themselves could be able to please the eye. This helps to keep the atmosphere in your hands and mind or just relax with a drawing. Thus, I would like to tell about some works that really impressed me.

Atelier Olschinsky founded in 2002 is a small creative studio based in Vienna, Austria. Peter Olschinsky and Verena Weiss are operating in various fields such as graphic design, illustration, photography and art direction. In addition to their jobs for clients they also run several independent projects, always trying to develop and refine their work.

There are several series of works by this author. I would like to dwell on the series "Cities." This is a fictional urban world that has more in common with kiber punk future, rather than with existing cities. This is unearthly city mazes, sprawling like a tumor, in breadth and upwards. They are radical expressions of non-existent, but the probable political, economic, cultural, and scientific systems. This is one of the scenarios of Civilization.

The illustrations are inspired by the work of American architect Lebbeus Woods. The main area of his research are architecture in crisis states, border architecture, architecture of the future in the areas of natural disasters and wars. He is interested in entirely new modern society, which creates a new type of city. His designs are fantastic and quite aggressive to the existing architecture and to man, is a radical redrawing of the present world. He is looking for new ways to survive, the new environment and new people.

Thereby, "Cities" portray something that could be like our urban centers. This is - crazy, destructive and an intriguing alternative.

There are two ways for this pictures. From a distance - when you just see color, composition, trying to understand the overall impression. But I would advise you to examine the picture closer. It is rather interesting and exciting to explore.

Architectural solution for the Moscow theater

I want to share photos of one great place in Moscow. I had a chance to go backstage of the theater "School of Dramatic Art" and observe the working process in a day time, just as if i work there.

About the theater:
Theater "School of Dramatic Art" was opened in February 24, 1987. The founder of the "School of Dramatic Art" offered a unique artistic model: Lab - School - Theatre. The concept of the Theater Lab, in contrast to the Repertory Theatre - is focusing on finding and research, with the possibility of constant experiment. The unity of practice and study of the nature of dramatic art is realized in the laboratory performances.

Architecture

The new theater building in Sretenka designed by Anatoly Vasilyev, Igor Popov (School of Dramatic Art), Boris Tkhor, Sergei Gusareva (Mosproekt 2, Workshop number 6). Construction carried out on the money of the Moscow Government and under the personal patronage of the former mayor of Moscow, Yuri Luzhkov. The theater is open to visitors May 4, 2001.

We can compare this multifunctional theater with a city or town-theater. Two halls and two scenes: Arena and Globe, as well as all the major functional blocks are connected with each other in Atrium place: spectator lobby, under a transparent dome, it looks like the "internal street".

The architecture of the buildings reflects the originality of the creative and organizational structures, the uniqueness of the aesthetic principles of the theater "School of Dramatic Art." The "through" system of two stages, rehearsal rooms and a hall for training, dance and music classes correspond to this laboratory and repertoire interpenetration.

There are natural lighting, which penetrating through the windows, air, which fills the daily practice of the actors, the atmosphere of the laboratory and staging performances. Natural light is replaced by the rays of spotlights, creating a lively play of light.

Scene "Arena" opens up a wide range of spatial solutions: from "the Japanese scene", which is not separates the audience and actors, to the classic "Italian box". The gallery and balcony boxes located on the second and third levels. It is intended for the audience, but can also be used as a playing space.

Octagon hall "Globe" crown by a glass marquee. By analogy with its prototype-Shakespeare "Globe" - portal has five-tier stage vertical and three tiers of galleries for spectators. Tablet Hall Globe can completely go down into the hold.

Work on this project began in the year of creating the theater and continued (albeit with interruptions), until the completion. It takes nearly 14 years. The architecture of the buildings embodied the aesthetic principles put forward by Anatoly Vasiliev and artistically designed by Igor Popov. Building on Sretenka embodied in itself the whole history of the theater "School of Dramatic Art" and its future.

Travelling in Austria I enjoyed the church in the Salzburg region in the village Zell am See. The church was founded in 1309. This is the Catholic church of St. Hippolytus. As the history says, this was the only one monastery in this region in those times.

I ejoyed the massivе stucture of the Catholic church and the place where it is situated-between a big lake and Alps. It is constucted of big stone blocks creating special medieval atmosphere in the village

When Annie Leibovitz was in high school, she became interested in many arts. She began to write and play music. Later she went to the San Francisco Art Institute. She became interested in photography when she was in the Philippines. After that she continued to develop her skills and worked many different jobs. One job was on a kibbutz Amir in Israel in 1969.Nowadayd Annie Leibovitz photography portraits are some of the most popular photographs in America. This is because of her style. Annie Leibovitz photography style derives from the relationship between the photographer and the subject. She and the subject have close collaboration, and the result is often a stunning picture.Last week I visited an excibition of Annie Leibovitz called The life of the photographer. From my point of view, this is the best way to show what you want to say via photography-showing your daily photographs. She expresses all the emotions in her works. In addition to this, she presents the events which happened with her during the life.She is a great photographer because she knows how to show the reality. But she is rather rude. In the exhibitions there were the photographs of her father's grave, illness of her best friend and the vestiges of crime (bloody walls after some children were killed). Actually, I understand that she is an artist and she is doing everithing for art, but such things seem to me too personal and even disgusting. I am not supposed to critisize her. Actually, her commertial works of celebrities are great and she suceeds in making a person show real emotions while being a model for a photography. Photographs of Nickole Kidman, Leonardo Dicaprio, Jack Nickolson and Demi Moor are amazing. Moreover, many photographers say they are jealous of her ability to make the photographs look realistic.Nevertheless, my impression of her as a photographer was ruined by the frustrating reality, shown in works. In addition, I personally can not accept her showing the grave of her father to the whole world.

Worker's clubhouse by A.Rodchenko

In the neighborhood of the exhibition of Tatlin works, I described in previous post, there is the installation of Alexander Rodchenko called "Worker's clubhouse".

"Worker's clubhouse" - is a complex decision that was invented for The Communist Party in 1920s.

The room was divided in several parts by using different colors. There are some functional zones: library, meeting place, zone for chess game, an appropriate equipment was placed inside of these zones.

The furniture was developed especially for small areas. So, Rodchenko tried to use each santimeter of free space and introduce some innovations, particularly folded furniture.

The most interesting thing for me - a machine for self-published newspaper. It looks like a box with different windows that can be used for writing text in it. A roll of paper is fixed on the top on this box and after all windows get full, this part of paper can be cut and wall newspaper is ready.

The interior of worker's clubhouse was developed for Russian Pavillion in France and was very popular among visitors, especially russian.

It is wonderful how modern this place looks in our days - simple (even naive) form and decision, focus on functionality and clearness of lines. The worker's club - the most outstanding work that reflects aesthetic of constructivism and its desire for inventive functional decisions.

To measures of the world art industry, ten years - age small, however then, in the far 2001, taken place in small cozy space in ЦДХ the Photo gallery of a name of brothers of Ljumer became the first private photographic gallery in Russia.

The first serious anniversary the Gallery marks an exhibition of collection works from own fund. It more than 150 vintage photos, only early author's prints – the most valuable and rare exhibits галерейного meetings on which it is possible to track all stages of development of the Soviet photographic art.

Pioneers of the reporting 20-30х years B.Ignatovich and A.Rodchenko (group "October"), the master of a genre photosketch J.Halip, legendary огоньковец A.Shajhet, тассовец M.Markov-Grinberg and other masters who have created a visual image of the new country open an exposition.

And at last, before the spectator the most "western" photographers, classics of the Lithuanian school of A.Sutkus, A.Matsijauskas, V.Butyrin will appear.

The special place in a collection is occupied with a city Moscow photo (N.Granovsky, A.Potresov, V.Huhlaev, E.Evzerihin) – photographic annals of capital with which spectators could get acquainted at a summer exhibition «Moscow stories» in the photo Center on Red October.

The collection is a result of long-term work with archives, presence at the main international auctions and photographic fairs, deep studying of history of a domestic photo. Years the Photo gallery of a name of brothers of Ljumer already is a lot of conducts research, exhibition and publishing. In many respects thanks to such projects, as «the Moscow photographic collections» (2005), «the Anthology of Russian photo of the XX-th century. A photo 60-70» (2007), «the Phenomenon of the Lithuanian school. The western photo in the USSR» (2010), also has developed this unique collection.

Tatlin exibition

From the 5th of October to the 23d of February 2012 on Tretyakov gallery there is an exhibition "Endness cup of The Great" that is devoted to Vladimir Tatlin - a key figure of russian avant-garde, "an inventor" of new forms of art, one of the founders of constructivism.

The most bold and fantastic experiments in russian art in 20th century are linked with his name.

His works absolutely destroy an illusion of artistic flatness and make it 3-dementional.

There are no many pictorial works on the exhibition, but they can give a chance to retrace the changing of artist's manner and his adoption to free springy line.

Tatlin's fantastic and unusual works such as "Material collections", model of Monument of III International, utopian project of flying apparatus "Letatlin", that have made his name worldwide known, are combined in his practice with modeling of everyday life objects.

There are also interesting Tatlin's works that were made with collaboration with some theatre directors - stage sceneries and costumes.

I was amazed by his costumes for one of Hlebnikov's play, they are also shown at this exhibition.

In spite of the fact, that Tatlin was an eternal dreamer, he wanted to use art for for the public good. He tried to formulate a modern way of life without aesthetics of the past period of time. He tried to integrate art in everyday life.

How the Architectural New Year looks like?

Yesterday at the Artplay (www.artplay.ru) where placed my alma mater - British Higher School of Design (www.britishdesign.ru) was celebrated the Architectural New Year. Right at the entrance, getting a plan in the form of Artplay map with schedules of activities, invited people were offered to try mulled wine which was cooked right on the street.

For the atmosphere in the street was responsible the Artpley radio, which I have not notice before.

All the events of the evening were beginning in the third building. On the road I met ice sculptures that were in the process of creation.

ARCHITECT OF POWER. 120th ANNIVERSARY Boris Iofan

In the suite of the main building of the State Museum of Architecture. A. Shchusev opened a unique exhibition devoted to the work of Boris Moiseevich Iofan - outstanding Soviet architect, the rise of creative career that was in the 30s of last century.

The author of the famous residential complex «House on the Embankment," a government sanatorium "Barvikha" Pavilion of the USSR to the International Exhibition in Paris in 1937 with a sculpture of the "Worker and Collective Farm Girl" VI Mukhina Institute of Oil and Gas. Gubkin, the initial project of Moscow State University. MV University at Sparrow Hills (which served as the basis for the project LV Rudnev), Institute of Physical Culture in Izmailovo and many other projects and facilities, Iofan down in history primarily as the architect adopted to implement, but has not implemented an ambitious project of the Palace of Soviets.

Palace of Soviets was to become not only a central city dominated by high altitude, which would be oriented perspective and layout of the streets surrounding neighborhoods, but also the tallest building in the world. That project required the Palace of Soviets, Moscow advent of skyscrapers, which were conceived as a satellite building of the Palace of the Soviets in the city structure. And just flared Great Patriotic War froze the construction site, which worked on the implementation of an industry for the production of special steel and special brick, reconstructed streets of Moscow, torn down and erected the building. Today I had the opportunity to visit this exhibition and would like to express my humble opinion: More than anything, this exhibition I was struck not the architecture itself, but the manner of presentation of the author. As in his sketches, drawings (front, sections, perspectives), the author combines various equipment supply work and materials to create them (pencil, charcoal, ink, sanguine, watercolor). Not only the architecture of the author's striking in its monumentality, but also their presentation.

OstenGruppe is an association founded by designers Eric Belousov, Igor Gurovich and Anna Naumova. It appeared in Moscow in 2002, during the period of the rapid growth of the Russian advertising industry. The group’s activities are based on principles of the alternative culture, i. e. pre-revolutionary protest, radical attitude to the visual language, principal stand, liking for avant-garde thinking, ideology of the cultural diktat. OstenGruppe is a group of artists with their own styles, skills and dispositions. Individuality of each member contributes to the whole image of the group.

During a rather short period of time, the OstenGruppe has become a cult group in the Russian design. Not differentiating between the «low» and «high» genres, the group focuses its attention on the genre of the street poster art, seemingly non-topical in the 21st century. Following traditions of the 20th century graphic art and using cutting-edge achievements in the field of visual culture, the designers breathe new life into the social and plastic achievements of the Russian avant-garde art. The «art of the day» principle becomes vividly apparent in collaboration of the OstenGruppe with the Cultural Centre DOM. The lab provided design for music events. The poster transforms from a street advertisement into a method of the alternative visual culture.

The up-to-date poster is a platform for socialization of the artistic gesture and at the same time for the plastic experiment. Balancing on the verge of the applied and visual arts, public and individual utterance, the poster is called upon to bridge the gap between the «high» and the «low» cultures. Moreover, the poster performs social functions. It touches upon the issue of communication and its opportunities. What are the limits of the public utterance and do they exist at all?

The exhibition by OstenGruppe in Moscow Museum of Modern Art is called upon to expose the subject of the Russian contemporary poster and print art in the context of development and continuation of the avant-garde art of the 1920s. It is devoted to problems of the tradition and continuity in the Russian visual culture and the importance of the Russian print art in the world context. It is the first exhibition of the lab in the museum space. The exposition contains well-known and new works by the designers. Along with posters, there are objects, small print forms, documentary materials, which narrate the history of the group and introduce the project members to the audience.

A catalogue, illustrated with the most typical artworks by the group, has been published for the exhibition. This edition reflects the specific character of the designers, their approach to the creation of products of mass visual communication.

Vertical Moscow in The Schusev Museum of Architecture

Several days ago, when I drove along an unknown street, I noticed the unusual view on a famous building. It was Kotelnicheskaya skyscraper. This look surprised me and solidly saved in my memory. I thought about the role of viewpoint in our picture perception. Sometimes one can just change the angle of view and the opinion can be totally different.

May be after that I decided to visit the exhibition "Vertical Moscow" - there was a photo of one of stalin's high-rise buildings, MID in the press release.

"Vertical Moscow" - is a photo exhibition of italian photographer Gabriele Basilico, who specializes in architectural photo.The exhibition is held in The Schusev Museum of Architecture and consists of two parts - one of it is a series of black-and-white photos of Stalinist skyscrapers (its also called "7 sisters") , another - color photographs of Moscow, that were made from bird's eye view.

The main goal of this exhibition - to reveal the changes that have happened in the city landscape over the past years.

Many frames were made with unusual perspective, may be for creating a new coordinate system. Our view skims not only up and down or to the right and to the left, but in other directions.

Why did Gabriele choose these dispositions for his photographs? The author compares modern Moscow and Moscow of the 1950s that's why he takes his pictures using the places, that were built in this time. It is very metaphorical. On some photos we even can see parts of Stalin's buildings the pictures were taken from. It probably was made for reinforcement of this effect. A viewer looks at modern Moscow from the past in both the literal and figurative senses.

Vertical view is the view full of hope. When people dream they always look up. A mother looks top-down at her child when he develops.

Basilico's work

What kind of changes can we see on these photos? On my opinion these changes are unnoticeable in spite of the fact that almost each photograph contains a view on a new building ("City center" or "Swiss hotel") or an indication of a new epoch (advertising poster panels). The pictures look like the photos of the 1960s.

Selected scale allows to notice some details - signs,people and cars. Its aren't just topographic scheme. Basilico's investigation is closely connected to people's activity. His pictures are about life and not about objects.

I think the author wanted to say that for architectural changes it is not enough to build new buildings. The global changes happen inside the society and inside each member of the society. Without these changes a new buildings don't create a new image of the city but look out of the place.

What can I say about these changes? Can we see them on the photographs? Did we change? Or are we still the same?

I think, yes, we are still the same.

Conversation about paintings and sculptures is the foundation to comprehending art. Artworks are discussed by viewers, critics and art historians. Artworks are commented by artists, who quote paintings and sculptures of their predecessors in their own pieces of art. From the moment of its creation, every artwork includes a set of commentaries. Thoughtful watching and talking about art mean articulating opinions and ideas conveyed in the artworks. The process is endless, and, moreover, the start and the end of it are imperceptible, as the first commentaries are hardly to be restored, and the last ones will be expressed in the distant future. To comment art is the main practice to understand it.

Twenty-five topics of the exhibition deal with diverse, sometimes incompatible ways of interpretation and commenting. Each theme demonstrates not only a new logic of communication with art, but also a new form of emotional experience. It reveals the potential of the commentary in a different way. It helps the visitor to occupy the main place in the exhibition by right; he or she becomes the key element in the series of endless commenting. Moving on through the halls, the visitor experiences the whole chain of intellectual, psychological and emotional conditions. He is to notice the semantic links between the hall’s architecture and the theme of the exhibition, played up in the unique museum space, and to become aware of the diversity of philosophical ideas and aesthetic strategies, saturating main art tendencies of the past century.

The title of the new selection from the collection of Moscow Museum of Modern Art «ARTisARTisART» refers to the «Two Hours in an Empty Tank» poem by Joseph Brodsky (1965). The tautologically sophisticated line, a repercussion of the self-reflection so characteristic of art, has become a starting point for the main idea of the new display. The idea is to understand art as an honest and many-sided open commentary. Two hours, mentioned by Brodsky, are an approximate period of time, which a viewer usually spends in the museum. MMoMA invites him to find himself in the area of crisscross references and mutually enriching dialogues between authors, artworks, the architecture of the museum’s halls and the viewer himself.

As a matter of fact, the commentary represents a universal continuity of generations. It is a prevailing element in art history and, at the same time, a stimulus for the development of new art processes. The exhibition is planned as a fascinating trip around the world of ideas of the 20th and 21st centuries, which are rendered by different visual arts. While creating their art, artists tried to represent and to transform different forms of cognition. A genuine artwork includes an impulse; its force makes the viewers discuss, comment, reflect upon the concept of the artwork and ideally calls upon for a constructive worldview, spreading these higher ideas. Thus, art reflects life as well as essentially influences upon it.

The new display follows the international museum practice of representing the museum’s collection in the form of annual changing exhibitions. MMoMA owns one of Russia’s most important collections of the 20th- and 21st-century art. Its holdings are regularly replenished with new artworks. The concept of each exhibition is elaborated by the museum’s team alone or together with an invited curator. It helps to show the collection from a new viewpoint, analyzing those or other artworks and art tendencies. The curator of the current selection is Dimitry Ozerkov, PhD, a well-known St. Petersburg-based art historian.

The new exhibition contains artworks, starting from the early avant-garde to the newest artistic tendencies. A considerable part of works has been selected specially for this project and will be exhibited in the museum for the first time. Gothic in Germany began to develop later than in France, but the Germans have created a new type - "brick Gothic." German architects replaced the French rose lancet window above the main entrance and break the horizontal lateral buttresses.
The building has a lot of support from the outside pilasters, arc-boutant , phial, galleries, cutting grids, and its main portal is decorated with sculpted plastic, decorative carvings, repeated from tier to tier, pointed arches.
The first two levels of the towers - square, they gradually pass into the octagonal shape of the upper three levels, tapering upward. There is no characteristic of Gothic buildings round window-sockets between spikes, nothing distracts from the majestic vertical liniy.Fasad Cologne Cathedral is decorated with unique sculptures and decorative carvings, each tier of the cathedral is in its own way and not in conflict with others.
The first stone cathedral was built in 1248 by Archbishop Konrad von Cologne Hohshtaden and was built over many centuries, the building continues to this day.
The cathedral from the inside is decorated with Rhine stone - they are lined vault, walls and even the ceiling of the temple. «Italians throw down a challenge to the whole world. Their furniture surprises, maybe, even irritates, but doesn't leave indifferent» (Meubles et decors, Paris). The Italian design continues to move on an innovative way, without being afraid of experiments and provocations. In comparison, with traditional character and sequence which are peculiar, for example, to the Scandinavian style, stories of the Italian design constant change of styles and directions, thus theses of a new design current often is characteristic refuted statements previous.

December 17, 2011 In the center of modern culture "Garage" was a large, hand-made festival "Art-experiment" This is the last event before moving out of the bus fleet in Bahmetevskogo to pavilions of Gorky Park.

Workshop size of 8500 square meters was divided into 25 zones, offering many ways to express themselves. Moscow Upstanding by Gabriele Basilico

This exhibition of a very famous italian photographer will take place in Moscow Museum of Architecture starting from December, 20th and will last till the 5th of February.

Radical changes in Russian history in the last 15 years, found a vivid expression of architectural transformations in its capital. Moscow has now become a daunting experimental platform. But the world is not well informed about the results of the Moscow's "laboratory" - the same changes in other countries are covered much wider. There is an acute shortage of visual materials which represents a shift from the culture of the Soviet Union to the New Russia at all levels - up to the formation of a new architectural appearance of the capital.

In such a "deficit" the project "Moscow Upstanding" was iniciated by the master of the urban landscape photo Gabriele Basilico. The project can be considered as a springboard for a documentary study of the metamorphosis of the urban landscape. Basilico has chosen unusual angles for his work - he took pictures from the top of the "Seven Sisters", the famous Moscow skyscrapers which were built during the Stalin era. This concept is the basis of a desire to reflect the photographer's image of post-Soviet metropolis with the most representative monuments of the height of socialism. Thus, for a new portrait of Moscow "vertical" dimension is the leading - as opposed to traditional horizontal vision.

Everything become distinctive from the heights, all changes in the urban landscape surrounding the "skyscraper", from their inception and until the collapse of the Soviet Union. Axial structure of the Stalinist era has been lost in endless traffic jams and sterile districts geometry which is similar to electronic circuits. On the scale panorama all these deformation processes can be seen: in the background of still flat terrain covered with vertical peaks and mountain ranges of new architectural silhouettes, vainly attempting to engage in dialogue with the historic stone towers from the revolutionary past, that is almost erased from our memory.

City landscapes is the main theme of Basilico's works which are not only comparative excursion into the history and topography, but also a dive into the depths of the metropolis, which helps to look from another side at the metamorphosis of the urban space, see the city with new and unexpected quarters - all through a poetic, meditative process of photographing.

The National Center for Contemporary Arts with the support of the Spanish Embassy and Cervantes Institute in Moscow organizes an exhibition of works by Antoni Muntadas, one of the world's most famous modern Spanish artists, Velázquez Prize laureatee and in 2005 he represented Spain at the Venice Biennale. The exhibition will introduce to Russian audience Muntadas' works created at different times, as well as a special artist’s project produced for the exhibition in Moscow.
Antoni Muntadas (Barcelona, 1942) is one of the first artists who started to use new technologies in the visual arts and make artistic exploration of virtual space. He has always concerned, over the years, about critical rethinking of ideology, historical memory and political power structures, cultural industries, different social contexts, and interaction between public and private spaces. Muntadas defines his artistic position as one of “an interpreter of images of what is happening in the world today” and who seeks “to identify what most often remains invisible.”
The exhibition of Muntadas' works is composed of two parts. His new project “On Translation: Stand by: Moscow” specially produced for Moscow and about Moscow is accompanied by a survey of his works. The survey part of the exhibition presents projects from 1970s to 1990s. (The Last Ten Minutes - II, 1977; Video Is Television? 1989; The Limousine Project, 1990; Portrait, 1994; La Siesta, 1995, etc.), as well as a series of his recent artworks, united under the title “On Translation.” The series “On Translation” is devoted to re-interpretation of social, political and cultural processes. The aim of the project is to attract the viewer's attention to the critical issues and conflicting phenomena in the contemporary environment.
The photo series "On Translation: Stand by: Moscow,” which was created specially for the Moscow exhibition, continue the cycle of projects "Stand by" represented by the author in various parts of the world. Looking at the people crowding or standing in queue and waiting for something, the artist explores, in his own words, “modern urban rituals”. The transformation of such a unique social and cultural phenomenon as the Soviet and post-Soviet queue is traced by Muntadas with the material of archival photographs, which are of no less importance in the project than the shooting on location.
The title of the exhibition, repeating the slogan of one of the artist's works, stresses that Antoni Muntadas' projects require the viewer not to give in to passive observation but to be a critical and attentive participant.

This can be an exciting experience for everyone to feel Spnich culture as well as it is interesting to see which associations about Mooscow could inspired the author for creating some of his works.

Starting from the 8th of December, Center of Photography Lumiere Brothers represents an outstanding exhibition of American photographer Ruth Orkin, passing in Russia for the first time . Ruth Orkin was an award-winning photojournalist and filmmaker.

Exhibition at the Center of Photography Lumiere Brothers includes 50 photographs of American life of 20th century with reflecting different milestones of Ruth Orkin creativity. The exposition will also demonstrate the 18-minute film "RuthOrkin: FramesofLife" (1995, USA) on the life and work of the photographer, which includes an interview with Cornell Capa, Mary Ellen Mark, etc.

She framed the widow of Henry III as the grave: black ceiling and black walls painted pale skeleton, with silvery tears, shovels, spades and other attributes of death and grief. On the table a bouquet of white flowers - a reminder of the white mourning the White Queen.

The castle is really unusual! Emphasizes the beauty of reflection in the water! From this comes a feeling of lightness and grace. We were able to

come closer and pass under the arch, which is a continuation of the bridge-castle

Pushkin Museum inviting to Kandinsky exhibition

The Pushkin Museum presents the exhibition of canvases by Wassily Kandinsky, Russian artist, one of the founders of abstract art, and painters from The Blue Rider group established with his assistance. Every painting being exhibited belongs to the collection of the Lenbachhaus Gallery in Munich. The Kandinsky and Der Blaue Reiter exhibition will be on display at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts until January 15, 2012.

This is the first exhibition so fully presenting the paintings by The Blue Rider – 60 works including 30 canvases by Wassily Kandinsky produced between 1902 and 1911, as well as symbolist paintings by Franz von Stuck and Franz von Lenbach. The Blue Rider painters tried to develop new forms of art, they featured the abstract language of forms and color. The group founders were seeking for the equilibrium between “the great abstraction” and “the great realism”.

IV Biennale of Contemporary art. Tretyakov Gallery. "The Void's Hostages"

The exhibition called "The Void's Hostages" ("Заложники Пустоты") devotes to the "aesthetics of the empty space", i.e. to the "subject, which doesn't exist". But it occures that the void is a real artistic category, which becomes apparent in the works of conceptualustic artists of the XIX - XXI centuries.

This exhibition was rather odd to me. But I realised that it had a relaxing action and after that the bright and colourful pictures of the permanent exposition seemed very hard and aggressive.

Some examples of the exhibits, which I liked the most:

Ilya Kabakov. "On Gray Paper". Album.

It was a book with the cover "On Gray Paper" and 15 empty sheets of paper. The idea of it was to show that a spectator who doesn't understand why there's nothing on these sheets nevertheless continues to look at them and tryes to find some sence in it! But when he reaches the last gray sheet of paper it makes him fun and embarrasses him a bit.

Nikita Alexeev. "Twelve possibilities of the grey void"

This was remarkable, because it contained some colours. There were twelve pictures which were painted in different dull colours and had some notes on them, which said:

"Gray as a mouse"

"Gray as grass"

"Gray as clouds"

etc.

The exhibition contained some records of interesting activities of artists, which had the same puprpose - to explore the void as an artistic tool and try to achieve the clarity of feelings.

The exhibition lasts from 27th September to 13th November, so today it is the last possibility of visiting it!

I had a chance to get acquainted with the interior of the fashionable Shop & Bar Denis Simachev, and along with Denis Simachev’s atr.

Due to my study, I had to understand the nature of this crazy concentration of everything in this place, but mainly my task was to draw attention to interior details, search for unconventional materials finishes, find some interesting constructive solutions.The interior reflects the mood and tastes of its creator, because Denis found all the decisions about bar and shop design by himself, and also he was engaged in search and purchase furnishings and. According to his friends and colleagues he have been very passionate about this process.

My impressions of the bar interior - an abundance of appetizing red, a variety of textures and detail, which gives the movement, and at the same time, absolutely domestic, pacifying atmosphere. That is the uniqueness of the Simachev’s interior.

It is easy to bring a lot of different amusing knick-knacks from the whole world and beautifully place them in the interior. It is difficult to make this place cozy and comfortable, to make all these elements works together for the one general idea, for the same feelings.

The exhibition ‘Organic Dwelling. Biomimicry in Design and Architecture’, which has been organized by famous designer and trend forecaster Lidewij Edelkoort, was held in Moscow Museum of Architecture.

The main idea of this event is investigation of the urgent issue of human and nature relationships, their impact on contemporary design and architecture and, in some case, elucidation what organic design is meaning.

Lidewij Edelkoort has presented her view on this question with searching multimedia presentation that is founded on the visual analysis of works of a few designers and architects (such as Pieta-Linda Autila, North Design Office, Wang Shu, Shigeru Ban, Foster & Partners, Edouard Francois, Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid and Herzog & De Meuron). This presentation depicts with examples how designers convert the language of the forms, colours and textures of the nature to objects of design.

Also, as a platform for analysis of organic forms, constructions and textures, which are reconsidered by designers there are represented a set of chairs, accompanied with audio presentations about different organic objects which are served as their prototypes. Among them, there are shown well-known ‘Cabbage’ chair by Nendo for ‘Cappelini’,

amazing futuristical ‘Batoidea’ chair from collection of out-door furniture by Peter Donders,

air-weight ‘Net work’ chair by Werner Aisslinger.

In the whole the exposition is quite compact and small-scale, but in spite of it, works as a good catalyst for creativity and being attentive to the nature and organic forms as sources of inspiration.

In the exhibition it was interesting to see how to work with such simple materials: paper and charcoal and using it to create collages, video projection, installation, animation.

October the 20th in the “House in Brestskaya” (http://www.dom6.ru/) was opened the XII Festival "Landscape Architecture. View from the house". 20.10.2011 - 24.10.2011 Address: 6, 2-ya Brestskaya, Moscow.

In addition to the traditional show of landscape projects this year the competition of student works and installations on eco-friendly theme "Man’s parking" were held. The festival has taken place for 12 years and this year it also includes the "Green Project" in which the principal note was innovative and environmentally friendly design. Each year the festival presents more and more projects related to the renovation of urban squares, parks and outdoors territories.

One of the most interesting expositions became the work for the project "Smart Park" based on the theme of reconstruction of Gorky park performed by students of High School of Landscape Architecture and Design.

Also the works made by the "Start" school students impressed a lot. Fifteen years old designers created "live buildings" - "House of clover," "Tree House" etc.

However, the brightest part of the festival in my opinion is the "Man’s parking" installation curated by Sergei Yaralov. Some works are very pleased my eye and impresses by the keenness of wit.

But, as you might expect, my heart was given to the stand which represents the window’s decoration of russian wooden architecture. Models were presented relatively to different regions and are made with high quality.

I should mention one more amazing attraction of “House on Brestskaya”: the mock-up of the central part of Moscow. Its creation takes more than 10 years, it made at a scale of 1:500 from different types of wood. The mock-up is constantly being updated, responding to the changes in Moscow.

Moscow International "Circle of Light" Festival

For the first time in history of carrying out large-scale mass events in Moscow, October 2011, the Moscow International festival of light will be held – the project initiated and organized by The Moscow City Government. The chairman of organizing committee is the Mayor of Moscow Sergey Sobjanin.

The first Moscow International Festival of Light will "make revolutionary transformation of the main capital sights, will underline in dynamics the grace of the architectural forms of Moscow cultural monuments, and will inhale new energy in city symbols." "Circle of Light" will fully reflect public interest to modern, innovative technologies and to art of light itself.

There will be 361 multimedia displays and light installations In the festival program (both on buildings facades, and in landscape territories) in which main architectural city objects, the most expressive and recognized for Muscovites and visitors of capital will be involved. The main site of the "Circle of Light" festival will become the Red Square in which light ensemble GUM will participate along with Spasskaya Tower, State Historical Museum and the Kremlin wall, Manezhnaya Square with "Moscow " hotel and Central Exhibition Hall "Manege", Saint Basil's Cathedral, Gorky Park.

SRETENKA DESIGN WEEK

Last week there was an interesting exhibition which took place on Sretensky boulevard and in the huge Central Market beside it. The first reason for visiting this festival was that there were our BHSAD tutors' works. So that fact aroused my interest in going there and seeing what did they look like. For instance, the picture above is Umberto Giraudo's work "PHILLIPS"(which I liked because of this simplicity and greatness in the same time; furthermore this tower resembled a tree from the bottom to the top, however it was made from not environmentally safe materials).

Also there was Vladimir Yusbashev's composition - three starling-house with the words on it: "Why don't people fly?"

Maybe it was a philosophical question or it was just a joke without any meaning. Actually I liked bright colors)

Inside there were some curious projects too, they were situated on all floors of a building and were hidden in the stores or just occupied walls and ceilings. They were rather interesting but for me the most fascinating projects were outside. Well, it was a great joy for me to visit this festival. It might be a good chance for everyone to manage to come there. And I think that's a pity that the festival was during one week only! So, there are some photos of the exhibits for people who didn't manage to look at them naturally.

Pushkin Museum has prepared an unforgettable gift to fans of surrealism - an exhibition of paintings by Salvador Dali.

3 September, two and a half months in Moscow, brought more than a hundred works of legendary artists from Dali Theater Museum in Figueras.The exhibition features 25 paintings, 90 graphic works and a series of objects and archival photographs associated with the name of Salvador Dali. The exhibition reflects the creativity and adolescence, and later works by Dali, where surrealism on the verge of a traditional painting, optical illusions and the sciences. Cross-cutting theme of the exhibition, linking Dali works with Russia to become a legendary figure of Gala - the wife of the artist Helena Diakonova, which became the heroine of many of his works.

Design of the exposure to the famous Moscow artist Boris Messerer, author of more than one hundred fifty staging of opera, ballet and drama performances. Messerer tried to recreate the image of the museum-theater in Figueras, using as a design element recognizable line of the eaves of the museum, where objects are ovate, alternate with prismatic structures.

To get to the exhibition, I had to wait 3 hours in the queue, but I have not regretted. The exhibition is excellent, and I highly recommend everyone to visit it!

Salone WorldWide Moscow 2011

Salone Worldwide Moscow, which takes place from 12-15 of October in Crocus-Expo, is an exhibition of the highest level for professionals in interior design, where more then 350 participants (furniture, lightning, textile and accesoires producers) show their best collections of modern furniture and accessoires for home interiors, made with the most progressive technologies and last worldwide trends. The global theme of this exhibition is "Creating the Future".

Furthermore, as it was before, SaloneSatellite WorldWide Moscow within the framework of Salone Worldwide Moscow, will traditionally present the most creative works of young and budding russian and foreign designers. The Fourth Moscow Biennale. TSUM

I had been also interested in the Moscow Biennale exhibitions and last week I managed to visit one of them, which took place in TSUM.

The first thing I really liked about it is that the entrance was free of charge. =)

The second thing is that when I came in the room of the exhibition I saw a big panel with some bright moving objects on it. In front of the panel there was a joystick, and with the use of it you could shoot at those objects and see how they change their form. That all was like a huge funny computer game, although this exhibit was called "The Garden of Error and Decay"(by Michel Bielicky&Kamila B.Richten). So that was a confusing thing about this project.

Then there were some other interesting things. For example, there was a project called "OP_ERA: sonic dimension" (by Rejane Cantoni&Daniela Kutshat): the person is surrounded by three walls, on which strings are projected and when the human pass his hand over these virtual strings they blow as natural ones! As for me I really like the interactive things, maybe it is because the person becomes a part of a project, not only its viewer.

Also there were some sarcastic pictures about the economics presumably of 90-s of 20th century (Casey McKee "Free Market Economists", "Bull Market Rally" etc.), which seemed to be a polotical joke or even a protest.

Other works remain obscure to me, such as a Video of the Typical Life in USSR and a project which demonstrated number of dogs with timers on their necks. Some works were educational but not thrilling (cuttings out from old newspapers about the Fashion and people's attitudes to life in the end of 20th century). One work consisted in a huge panel on the floor with the map of Moscow (downloaded from the Google) where people could leave their drawings or inscriptions. But the picture was blured and I couldn't find a free space to write something on it, actually I didn't even know what to write there. There weren't any hints!

To summarise, I had got positive emotions about the visiting that site. The interactive projects had impressed me the most. But from the other side some works remain abstract to me, maybe it happened because I didn't find the detailed descreption of them or I was just unable to think and try to understand them more.

Nevertheless I recommend you to visit this exhibition, while I will try to visit others, which concern Biennale Festival.

P.S. I didn't manage to find the name of the autor of this project, so I would be very thankful if someone wrote it to me=)

Moscow Biennale report

Being a person with rather cold attitude to contemporary art, I was surprisingly impressed by the Moscow Biennale. I visited the exhibition, which currently takes place at the Artplay.
The range of artists was very wide and Biennale showed a real global selection of contemporary art. In addition to this, I was impressed by the number of presented works and how different they are from each other. The range goes from pieces, made of paper bags to technological devices, affecting the mind of the human and works with political meaning.

I would like to point out the works, which affected me the most in both positive and negative ways. According to things I really liked, I admired how the technological equipment in tandem with art create absolutely new incredible things. One of the best examples of this was the scanner room, where the scaner beams going in the dark one by one light some tangled wires, creating an excellent picture. The other thing I loved was the dark room with talking speakers hanging at the ear-level. Walking in the room creates incredibly nervous atmosphere and the head starts going round. From my point of view, this is amazing because it makes the human very confused and creates some unforgetable atmosphere. In addition to this, there were several works, which demonstrated new technologies, which enable capturing the motions of people and showing it as a projection.

As to negative emotions, I was confused by the exposition of three debtor countries such as Greece, Italy and Spain, made up from matches to be burnt at the end of Biennale. This seems to be too political to be a piece of art, to my mind.

To sum up, I was very satisfied with the exhibition because it shows the union of countries, technological globalization in tandem with art and, at the same time, a variety of new ideas, which force you to broaden your mind.

The Gallery of the Actual Music ("Галерея Актуальной Музыки")

This festival is organised by Moscow State Philharmonic. You will hear some classical music compositions, which are composed by avant-garde masters of music, such as Edgard Varèse, Iannis Xenakis ( who was also an architector and worked with a famous master of Architecture - Le Corbusier), Luigi Nono and others. The project includes a separate programme, where a music of young Europian and Russian composers is presented. There will be an exhibition of modern composers` scores, which I advise you to visit, because these scores are very different from the classical ones. I was very impressed by the way they were written, when I firstly saw them last year!

I hope you will like this music, too, because it is a very different from all, that you could hear before. And, of course, this kind of music prompts to create something really impressive and unusual, so that is a very important and actual point of visiting this festival.

4th Moscow Contemporary Art Biennale

Think the 4th Contemporary Art Biennale might be the best kept secret in Moscow at the moment. Some fabulous (and famous) international artists on show - right here in ArtPlay, next to our School - in fact in the space we had our own end-of-year exhibition.

Also lots of other things at Tsum and other places, which you can find out about from the Biennale website. Well, at least you can try. I found it almost the least informative website I have ever used.
